Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that it is ready to open its 1,033-slip marina to slip holders and the public one week ahead of the anticipated May 15 opening date.

The NFTA-Boat Harbor at 1111 Fuhrmann Blvd., less than three miles from Downtown Buffalo will open the 2013 season Wednesday, May 8, to accommodate slip holders and boaters who want to get an early start at docking or launching their boats at the marina.

Peter G. Demakos, NFTA commissioner and chairman of the NFTA's Property Committee said, “As a result of Mother Nature providing us with a relatively easy winter and the dedication and hard work of our employees, we are able to give our customers a head start on the boating season this year.”

During the off-season maintenance workers were busy making improvements to the facilities and grounds that include the restrooms, launch ramp, decking and additional picnic tables have been added to accommodate patrons.

As a customer service, boaters who want to file a float plan can do so via the marina's website. Boat captains leaving the marina for one or more days (not necessary for short trips) may file a float plan with the dock master before casting off. This form is available online at nftaboatharbor.com or the dock office. Having this information on hand may prove valuable in the event an emergency occurs.

Rentals for the 2013 boating season are well ahead of last year, but there still are slips available to rent for this year. There are 1,017 slips for boats of varying sizes and 16 slips to accommodate Jet Skis. Slip rental information can be obtained at 828-0027 and online at nftaboatharbor.com.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced the Buffalo Niagara International Airport received a Balchen/Post Award for Outstanding Achievement at the recent 47th Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium.

The Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives recognized the BNIA's “snow removal team” with the Honorable Mention Award in the medium commercial airport category. All categories of airports - commercial, general aviation and military compete for the awards. This is the 37th consecutive year that awards have been presented and the seventh time the BNIA has been so honored, the last recognition being for the 2010-11 winter.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director, said, “I am extremely proud of our team of snow removal professionals based on the reliable and consistent job they do in keeping our runways safe and operational during winter storms.”

Nominations for consideration come from airlines, pilots, general aviation officials, hotel owners, corporate pilots and ground transportation operators. An independent selection committee screens the recommendations and makes the selections in various categories based on airport size, which is determined by the number of flights in and out of the airport during the year.

In making their selections, the committee considered not only the crew's ability to keep the airport runways free of ice and snow, but also snow removal plans, size of area to be cleared, equipment readiness, personnel training and overall safety awareness.

This past winter the main runway was never closed. “This award speaks volumes about the dedication and ability of our airfield crew, who work around the clock, including being away from their families on holidays and missing family functions while working to maintain our runways,” Minkel added.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is hosting the 47th Annual Snow Symposium April 22-23, at the downtown Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Organizers expect 300 airport professionals, responsible for runway operations from around the world.

Kimberley A. Minkel, Executive Director of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will open the conference, highlighting the economic and safety concerns that make snow, slush and ice mitigation so significant and the importance of successful strategies.

“A snowstorm can cost a major airport more than a quarter of a million dollars in removal alone. The cost of delays compounds that number. None of which compares to the potential safety risks ice and snow can create. The chance for the snow removal teams from around the world to exchange ideas and best practices is invaluable,” Minkel said.

This year's featured speaker is Ralph Hood, a pilot and active in the aviation industry since 1972. During the 1980's he taught an aviation management course. He writes a blog and columns for AIRPORT BUSINESS magazine and other aviation periodicals. He has served on the planning committee of Southeastern Aviation Trades Association, as national training director for the Learn-to-fly Program, and as a director of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Mr. Hood was inducted into the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame in September 2003, and holds the Class C1C, World Speed Record from Huntsville, Alabama to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

This is the 27th consecutive year the symposium is being hosted by the BNIA Event chairman, Thomas Dames, BNIA Airfield Superintendent said, “Western New York is a great place to host colleagues from other snowy climates. Buffalo, in particular, has always struggled with a reputation of being very snowy, but attendees return to their cities with a very positive message and different experience about the climate in Western New York. ”

The featured event of the symposium is the Balchen/Post Awards, which are given to airport snow-control teams that have demonstrated determination and excellence in keeping their respective airport runways open and safe during winter storms.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that Metro Rail will operate modified, single track service Saturday, March 23, due to demolition work related to the City of Buffalo's project to return vehicular traffic to Main Street.

Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Metro Rail service along the aboveground portion will operate only on the outbound track. The inbound track will be closed, as work commences on the demolition of the inbound Theater Station on the west side of Main Street.

As a result, at Fountain Plaza Station all passengers will have to transfer to a train on the outbound side to continue their trip.

The day's first train will leave Erie Canal Harbor Station at approximately 7 a.m. and depart every 15 minutes thereafter. The first train will depart University Station at approximately 7:30 a.m. and every 15 minutes thereafter. There may be minor delays in service.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that customers who want their own reserved parking space, close to the terminal when they arrive at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport has become a reality.

BNIA customers wishing to have a reserved, covered parking space in the Daily/Hourly garage, with easy access to the terminal can now go online to reserve a space by the day or for multiple days.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “We are pleased to be able to offer our airport customers this upgrade in parking convenience. Reserved, covered parking right in front of the terminal is a unique service that sets us apart from off-airport parking providers.”

Reservations are made and paid for online at buffaloairport.com. After an account is established, the customer indicates how many days, the dates they want to reserve and pre-pays the $3 per-day reservation surcharge using a credit card. They then print their receipt, which is to be placed on the dash board while the car is in the reserved section of the garage. The daily parking rate is paid when the customer exits the parking facility.

In addition, the airport's website features a parking calculator that provides the exact cost of parking in any airport lot, parking availability and rates for each of the airport's four onsite parking options.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that Metro Rail will operate modified, single track service Saturday, March 9, due to demolition work related to the City of Buffalo's project to return vehicular traffic to Main Street.

Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Metro Rail service along the aboveground portion will operate only on the inbound track. The outbound track will be closed, as work commences on the demolition of the outbound Theater Station on the east side of Main Street. Theater Station has been out of service since February 18.

During this time, all inbound and outbound passengers in the aboveground section will board and exit the rail cars using inbound stations on the west side of Main Street.

The day's first train will leave Erie Canal Harbor Station at approximately 7 a.m. and depart every 20 minutes thereafter. The morning's first train will leave University Station at approximately 7:35 a.m. and every 20 minutes thereafter. There may be minor delays in service.

Buffalo, NY . . . Calling civilians interested in learning about the structure and responsibilities of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's Transit Police department.

The police department is conducting its third Citizens Police Academy to give people a behind-the-scenes look at how a modern police department functions. The six-week course helps people to better understand the challenges and rewards of law enforcement in general, and specifically how the NFTA-Transit Police interacts with the community.

Admission is free and open to all members of the community, 18 years and older. All applicants are required to pass a thorough background check. Class size is limited to 15 people. Classes are two and half hours and will be held at various NFTA facilities.

Classes start May 1, and will include hands-on workshops, time in a firearms simulator, tour of communication center, K-9 Unit demonstration, tour of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, crime scene/photography, criminal investigations and a ride-along with a transit officer. Participants receive a graduation certificate if a minimum of 80 percent of the course work is completed.

Buffalo, NY . . . Metro Rail will operate modified service Saturday, March 2, due to demolition work related to the City of Buffalo’s project to return vehicular traffic to Main Street, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today.

All surface level train service will be shut down from 7:05 a.m. until noon, as construction crews work to remove the steel arches that span the track bed in the Theater District. During this period, train service will only operate underground between University and Allen Medical Campus stations.

To assist customers traveling through the aboveground section, Metro will operate a bus circulator service between Allen Medical Campus and Erie Canal Harbor stations.

Inbound, a bus will travel between Allen Medical Campus and Erie Canal Harbor stations by way of Pearl Street. All inbound customers will be picked up or let off along Pearl Street, a block west of the stations.

On the outbound side, the circulator will operate from Erie Canal Harbor Station to Allen Medical Campus Station by way of Washington Street. All outbound customers will be picked up or let off along Washington Street, one block east of the outbound stations.

A Saturday schedule will apply for the underground train service that will operate during this period, though there may be delays in service.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that the NFTA Police Department made an arrest on January 30 in connection with the theft of a 38 inch Samsung television from the baggage-claim area at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

NFTA police arrested 52-year old James E. Livingston of Grand Island, NY and charged him with one count of petit larceny for taking the flat-screen television from the baggage carrousel at the airport January 12.

Upon receiving a complaint from the owner of the television that it was missing, NFTA police officers and detectives reviewed security video from the baggage-claim area and were able to see the suspect remove the television from the carrousel and leave the terminal with it in his possession.

The suspect was arrested at his residence on Grand Island by NFTA officers Det/Lt. Michael Garrity, Detective Kevin Schilling, Detective Craig Palladino, and Officer Michael Livecchi with assistance from the Erie County Sheriff's Dept. where he voluntarily admitted that he had taken the television and given it to his unsuspecting daughter.

Livingston was taken into custody and arraigned in Cheektowaga Town Court. He was released on an appearance ticket and $200 bail. He is due back in court February 11.

The television was returned to NFTA police by Livingston's daughter, who is not being charged in the matter. The rightful owner is now in possession of the television.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority confirmed today that they are in receipt of a copy of the final Operational Review audit conducted by the Authorities Budget Office.

Howard A. Zemsky, NFTA Chairman said, “I want to thank the ABO for their time and effort they spent examining the operations of the authority. I feel the findings of the audit validate the extensive effort put forth by senior staff over the past year to address both short and long term financial efficiencies throughout the authority.”

The audit, which reviewed and analyzed NFTA operations, was conducted by four auditors over a period of seven months focused on the most recent fiscal years: 2010-11, 2011-12 and April through October 2012.

“We will fully process the audit and staff will completely review the recommendations made by the ABO for future consideration,” Zemsky added.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that its Metro transportation division is sponsoring an Open House in an effort to recruit needed employees.

Metro currently has various openings for qualified bus operators, mechanics and technicians who are seeking steady full-time employment that offers a competitive starting salary along with a comprehensive benefit package.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is soliciting proposals for a concessionaire to provide a combination of freshly prepared restaurant style food and beverage, retail including newspapers, souvenirs, phone and greeting cards, candy, basic traveler health and hygiene needs at the Metropolitan Transportation Center, 181 Ellicott Street, Buffalo, NY.

In addition, machine vending services are requested at the aforementioned MTC and Metro transportation centers in Niagara County located at 2250 Factory Outlet Blvd., Town of Niagara and 1124 Portage Road, Niagara Falls. Vending options should include service for cold drinks, hot beverages and snacks.

The Food, Beverage and Concession Services request for proposal is available online at bids.nfta.com.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that as work continues to progress on the City of Buffalo’s project to return cars to Main Street, its Metro Rail Theater Station will be permanently closed Monday, Feb. 18.

The closing and subsequent razing of both the inbound and outbound stations on the 600 block of Main Street was deemed necessary and prudent for safety and design reasons in order to ensure compatibility between vehicular traffic and rail cars in the vicinity of the rail portal to Main Street.

Following the removal of Theater Station, Metro customers, including persons with disabilities will continue to have access to the Theater District from the Fountain Plaza Station via signalized pedestrian crosswalks with disabled access features. The distance between Theater Station and the Fountain Plaza Station is 546 feet.

With the closing of Theater Station, Fountain Plaza Station becomes the first and last station in the Free Fare Zone.

Metro Rail schedules are available online at nfta.com/metro, at m.nfta.com using a mobile device, at transit centers and posted at each rail station.

Theater Station will continue to be fully operational through the close of business Sunday, Feb. 17.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that two of its Transportation Security Administration-certified Explosive Detection K-9 teams will be attending the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C.

At the request of the United States Department of Homeland Security; the NFTA Transit Police Department will be sending two of its TSA-certified Explosive Detection K-9 teams to support the Jan. 21 Presidential Inauguration by working with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the District of Columbia, Metro Transit Police Department.

NFTA Transit police officers Robert L. Bove and David A. Capretto, along with their K-9's Cora and Gino are set to depart Wednesday, Jan. 16 for Washington, D.C. They are two of 12 K-9 teams from across the country that will be assisting the TSA in providing addition security during inauguration proceedings.

George W. Gast, Chief of the NFTA Transit Police Department said, “I am extremely proud that our department will be represented during this high profile event. That we were considered speaks volumes about the capabilities and professionalism of our K-9 program and our officers.”

The additional canine teams will be specifically used throughout the WMATA transportation system for the purpose of security related to the event. The use of the extra teams is proportionate to the overall increase in security and awareness during the inauguration, which draws thousands of visitors to our nation's capital.

All assisting law enforcement officers will be duly deputized as Federal Officers by the U.S. Marshall's Service for the requested period of service.

The TSA National Canine Program will be responsible for direct reimbursement for expenses relating to lodging and travel costs for both officers and their canine companions.

This is the second time the NFTA Police have sent a K-9 team to the inauguration. In 2008, one team was deployed to provide additional transit security coverage.

Buffalo, NY . . . The purpose of today's special meeting of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's Board of Commissioners was to review and discuss the joint proposal submitted by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation and the City of Buffalo to acquire the NFTA's real estate holdings on the Buffalo waterfront.

“Upon a thorough review of the proposal, the NFTA Board of Commissioners provided staff with guidance and direction on how to proceed in negotiating what hopefully will be a timely and mutually beneficial agreement,” said Howard A. Zemsky, NFTA Chairman. “It is our intention to set up a meeting with all parties as soon as possible,” he added.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that the identifying names of the parking facilities at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport are in the process of being changed.

Changes are being made to airport signage, websites and promotional material this month and are expected to be completed by Feb. 1.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro Rail will extend service an additional two hours Monday, Dec. 31, to accommodate people attending the annual New Year's Eve Ball Drop at Roosevelt Square and the downtown First Night Buffalo celebration.

Train service will run continuously, making stops at all stations during the extended service period. Trains will operate on 20 minute intervals, with special trains intermingled as needed. It may be necessary to suspend service for a time due to the anticipated large crowd that gathers near the track bed in front of Roosevelt Square.

The last train is scheduled to leave Erie Canal Harbor Station heading outbound to University Station at 2 a.m. Tuesday, New Year's Day.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that Santa will be visiting downtown Buffalo Wednesday, Dec. 19, and he's going to use Metro Rail to see just how nice boys and girls are behaving this holiday season.

Santa and his helpers will visit the Metro Rail system between 11:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m., and will be stopping at four stations to give out candy canes, trinkets and listen to Christmas wishes. Santa's rail station visits are scheduled as follows:

LaSalle Station 1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Utica Station 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced The Sounds of Season performances will be returning to the downtown bus terminal (181 Ellicott St.) beginning Saturday, Dec. 8, compliments of musical ensembles from seven local schools.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA's Executive Director said, “With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season now upon us I hope the festive sounds of music and song being performed by the students will be enjoyed by all as they pass through the terminal.”

Buffalo, NY . . . A Boeing 727-200F aircraft from FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) made its final taxi today at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Airport and community stakeholders gathered to celebrate this generous donation to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Having our own plane provides our fire and police departments with the opportunity to train in a real life setting, on a continuous basis, which will sharpen their abilities to react and save lives, should an emergency situation occur at our airport.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is a commercial service facility that has an annual economic impact of $1.07 billion, supporting 16,628 jobs in the region. It is served by six airlines and two air cargo carriers. The airport is on target to once again serve more than 5 million passengers in 2012, and year-to-date has processed 37.35 million air cargo tons.

Airport Rescue Fire Fighting Unit

The BNIA ARFF unit got its start in March 1981, when it was created as the Public Safety department by the NFTA board of commissioners to handle both safety and security functions at the then Greater Buffalo International Airport. In April 1981, the NFTA's Public Safety unit assumed control of the airport's fire department duties from the Buffalo Fire department.

The ARFF department currently has a complement of 35 firefighters, four captains and the chief. The unit trains each day in various aspects of firefighting and conducts periodic tabletop exercises and drills at the airfield with area first responders to ensure that when they do work together in the field, they are all using the same techniques and methods to maximize their collective efforts.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that the NFTA Police Department made two arrests early Thanksgiving morning in connection with the burglary and theft of copper wire and pipes from a vacant NFTA Building at 195 Holtz Drive, in Cheektowaga.

The building in which the suspects were apprehended is scheduled for demolition in conjunction with the parking lot expansion project at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport that will add 1,000 parking spaces to the Long Term B Lot on Holtz Rd.

NFTA police arrested William H. Bartlebaugh, Jr., 23, from Clarence NY, and David D. Cummings, 41, also from Clarence. Bartlebaugh and Cummings were charged with Burglary, Illegal Entry with Intent to Commit a Crime, Possession of Burglary Tools, Grand Larceny and Criminal Mischief. Both suspects were arraigned in Cheektowaga Town Court, and are currently being held at the Erie County Holding Center pending further court hearings.

NFTA Police Officers Lt. John Herritage, Officers David Jaworek, Mario Capozzi, Louis Loubert, Charles Loubert, Michael Dau, Michael Bielanin, David Drozdiel and K9 Officer Mark Martinelli assisted with the arrest. NFTA Police were also assisted by the Erie County Sheriff's and Cheektowaga Police departments. Three additional suspects are still outstanding, and the incident continues to be investigated by NFTA detectives.

Buffalo, NY . . . New nonstop flights to West Palm Beach, Fla. from the Buffalo Niagara International Airport were announced today by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.

Starting Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, AirTran Airways will depart the BNIA each day at 10 a.m., arriving in West Palm Beach at 1 p.m. There will be a daily return flight leaving West Palm at 2 p.m., arriving in Buffalo at 4:55 p.m. All flights are nonstop. Flights will operate through February 13, 2013.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “Anytime we can offer our customers a new destination, especially a warm one during the winter, it's extremely good news.”

Seats can be booked now at airtran.com. Flights will be on Boeing 717's, which have a 117 seat dual class configuration.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Western New York Regional Economic Development Council and The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority today announced that Phase I of a $8.09 million improvement project to expand the Long Term B parking lot at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport by 1,000 spaces is ready to move forward. The project is in the first stages of the $6,867,811 award it received as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Regional Council initiative. This capital improvement project, which also received $1,226,419 from the BNIA, will accommodate current customer demand for low-cost, on site parking and anticipated increases in passengers in the future.

The additional 1,000 much needed parking spaces will be added to the Long Term B lot that runs along Holtz Drive north of Genesee Street. Once completed, the B lot will have a total of 2,901 spaces.

“I am very thankful for the financial assistance and extensive cooperation we received from the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council that has allowed us to move this project forward,” Howard A. Zemsky, NFTA chairman said. “Growth at the BNIA has and will lead to commercial development of the surrounding area, increasing the tax base as private investors continue see the value of being near the airport, thus adding job opportunities, which benefit our entire region.”

“The Buffalo Niagara International Airport plays an essential role in the development of business and tourism in the Buffalo Niagara region, which is why the Western New York Regional Council is pleased to award the NFTA funding to move ahead with this critical project,” said Western New York Regional Economic Development Council Co-Chair Satish K. Tripahi. “The increased passenger usage at our airport is a positive sign for our region, as airports are economic drivers, creating employment, acting as business gateways and serving as a impetus for tourism growth.”

Based on increased demand, especially during the holidays and spring break, the airport has been forced to lease off-site property in order to handle the parking overflow, especially from Canadian customers who year-to-date represent 47 percent of the airport's long term parkers. This expansion will prevent that from being repeated once the project is completed.

The BNIA has a daily average of 110 flights with nonstop service to 23 airports. In 2011 the BNIA served 5.1 million passengers, the sixth straight year of 5 million or more passengers. Originally, that milestone was not expected to be achieved until 2020. The BNIA benefits the entire state; even people who have never use air travel. For example, as a result of 805,462 cars parking on site in 2011, of which almost 50 percent were Canadian visitors, $1.57 million in tax revenue was collected and passed on to benefit the state and Erie County.

An Economic Impacts Study of Aviation in New York State conducted in 2009 by the Federal Aviation Administration and the NYS Department of Transportation revealed that 12,827 full- and part-time jobs and more than $620.5 million in expenditures are the direct result of on-airport businesses, including airport sponsor expenditures, and visitor spending at the airport. Including indirect expenditures, the total impact for Buffalo Niagara International Airport was (2009) $1.07 billion, supporting 16,628 jobs.

Starting in mid-November, Metro Contracting & Environmental, Inc. of Niagara Falls, NY will commence with the demolition and remediation of three structures on the property in preparation for site construction. The contract is for a not-to-exceed amount of $48,340.

Urban Engineers of New York, P.C. has been awarded a $407,142 contract for design services as part of Phase II. This portion is scheduled for the design to proceed through the fall and winter leading up to bid documents being advertised in late winter, for construction to start in early summer 2013. When completed, the BNIA will have a total of 7,877 or 14.5 percent more spaces on site to serve its customers.

Senator Tim Kennedy said, “This strategic investment in our local transportation infrastructure will boost the economic competitiveness of our state and help create jobs for Western New Yorkers. More people are flying out of the Buffalo-Niagara Airport, and this expansion project aims to capitalize on the growth. It will empower local businesses with new economic opportunities and further strengthen the economic bonds between Western New York and Canada. I applaud Governor Cuomo and our Regional Council for targeting the right opportunities to grow our economy.”

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that Metro's new enhanced weekday express service will commence on Routes 60, 64, 69, 72 and 204 Tuesday, Sept. 4.

The new enhanced express service is designed to get people to their destination faster, as a result of making few stops than regular service along the route. Free Wi-Fi is available to all customers on these five routes as an additional benefit. A 50 cent surcharge does apply to all enhanced express trips. Metro's reduced fare policy for eligible riders does apply to the surcharge.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “We are providing this new enhanced service in response to comments from our customers. It is important that we listen to them and respond to meet their needs so Metro can be as user friendly as possible.”

In addition to local express service, Routes 69 and 72 will each offer one early morning and afternoon enhanced express trip that was implemented as a result of collaborating with the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. This new service allows workers to arrive at the BNMC by 7 a.m. in order to accommodate their early start time and will help reduce parking congestion on campus.

All trips via Routes 60, 64 and 204 will feature enhanced express service.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that based on data released by The Brookings Institution, its Metro Bus and Rail service ranks near the top 10 percent for job coverage and is in the top third for providing access to jobs when compared to 371 transit providers in the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas. The report: Where the Jobs Are: Employer Access to Labor by Transit, released in July, finds that Metro provides transit coverage to 86.9 percent of the jobs in the metropolitan area, ranking it 11th in providing access to available employment. The report shows 100 percent coverage in cities and 82.2 percent in the suburbs.

In addition, the survey concluded that Metro had a labor access rate of 29.1 percent, ranking it 31st. This is the share of the metropolitan population that can reach the typical job in 90 minutes via Metro service. Cities have 51.9 percent and suburbs have 18.6 percent access.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “The survey shows that Metro's core service does a good job of providing access to jobs, but the shifting of jobs from the cities to the suburbs obstructs our ability to connect workers to opportunities and jobs in the outer suburban communities. As elected officials and community leaders continue to grapple with limited financial resources, it is critical for transit investment decisions to simultaneously address suburban coverage gaps, as well as disconnected neighborhoods.”

The report ranks Metro higher in each category than comparable transit agencies in New York State and ahead of communities such as Detroit, Indianapolis, Pittsburg and Cleveland.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will host a luncheon at the Protocol Restaurant, 6766 Transit Rd., Williamsville, Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m., to recognize the outstanding safety records of Metro vehicle maintenance workers and bus and train operators. In additional, the authority will salute employees who reached 25-years of employment with the NFTA.

This year 29 Metro operators will be recognized for safely operating their vehicle for 10 or 20 years, and eight maintenance employees will be congratulated for having a 10-year safety record. In addition, 37 NFTA employees celebrated a silver anniversary.

Further, Metro Rail operator Jose Ramirez will receive a special recognition for his quick actions in activating his train's emergency braking system as it approached two men in the track bed at the Utica Street Station April 5.

Acting NFTA Chairman, Henry M. Sloma said, “These men and women have dedicated a quarter-century of their lives to helping the people of Western New York get to work, school, church, a doctor's appointment or visit loved-ones. It is an honorable achievement in an honorable profession.”

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that detectives from the NFTA Transit Police department have solved the case of a Jan. 7, 2012 shooting involving a Metro bus.

While on the corner of Kensington Avenue and Bailey Avenue, a Metro bus was struck on the passenger side by a single gunshot from an unknown suspect. As a result of viewing videos from the bus, businesses in the vicinity of the shooting and interviewing witnesses at the scene, NFTA detectives Christopher DiPasquale and David Wayne were able to obtain several images of persons of interest.

George Gast, NFTA Chief of Police said, “This is a perfect example of tenacious police work that ultimately led to the arrest of the individual responsible for recklessly endangering the safely of Metro riders and others in the vicinity of the shooting.”

The Detective Bureau was able to identify several subjects from video evidence and conducted interviews with the subjects. With the assistance of the FBI Task Force and utilizing video evidence, detectives were able to obtain a possible identification of the suspect involved with the bus shooting. After obtaining an identification of a possible suspect, Detective DiPasquale and Lt. John Heritage interviewed and received a handwritten statement from the suspect, of his involvement in this incident.

The suspect voluntarily reported to NFTA Police Headquarters, with his legal guardian and was charged with Criminal Possession of a weapon 2nd, Reckless Endangerment 1st, and Criminal Mischief 3rd. Due to the suspect's age (15) at the time of the incident, the suspect was charged in Erie County Family Court, which is where the matter is currently being handled.

The Buffalo Police department also assisted in the investigation.

Buffalo Airport Plays Host for 27th Consecutive Year

Buffalo, NY . . . The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is hosting the 46th Annual Snow Symposium April 16-18 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Organizers expect a record attendance of 550 airport professionals, responsible for runway operations from around the world to attend.

Much of the draw centers on an impressive display of snow fighting equipment (runway plows, broom trucks, snow blowers) and vehicles that will fill 64,000 square feet of the convention hall. Manufactures are using the show as a promotional event for the launch of many new lines of equipment.

Astronaut Randy Bresnik (available for media before or during the event) will address the audience Tuesday, April 17 at a 12:30 p.m. luncheon relating the similarities between snow operations at airports and space flight. He will speak about his experiences in space and the value of establishing a training plan, conducting rehearsals and building contingencies into airport operations. A U.S. Marine, Colonel Randy Bresnik, was a crewmember aboard STS-129 (Nov. 16-29, 2009), which was the 31st shuttle flight to the International Space Station. During the mission the crew delivered two Express Logistics Carriers to the International Space Station, about 30,000 pounds of replacement parts for systems that provide power to the station, keep it from overheating, and maintain proper orientation in space.

Bresnik performed two space walks for a total of 11 hours and 50 minutes. While he was in orbit, his wife Rebecca gave birth to their daughter, Abigail Mae Bresnik Nov. 21. The STS-129 mission was completed in 10 days, 19 hours, 16 minutes and 13 seconds, traveling 4.5 million miles in 171 orbits, and returned to Earth bringing back NASA Astronaut, Nicole Stott, following her tour of duty aboard the Space Station.

Colonel Bresnik is an F/A-18 fighter pilot and has logged over 5,000 hours in 80 types of aircraft. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot Rating and an Unlimited Piston Engine Letter of Authorization.

This marks the 27th consecutive year the symposium is being hosted by the BNIA. Thomas Dames, the BNIA’s airfield superintendent and symposium chairman said, “The snow symposium committee is grateful for all the wonderful work the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the area hotels, and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority do to help make the event so successful. The hospitality the region offers makes it easy to find a solution that will benefit the Symposium and the region.”

Buffalo, NY:The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that a $1.4 million Airport Improvement Project, involving construction to the two-tier circulatory roadway system at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport is scheduled to start Tuesday, April 10.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “These structural improvements are an investment that ensures the successful operation of the terminal's infrastructure for many years to come and provides for the safety of our customers.”

Work on the departures roadway (upper level) will consist of milling the deck surface, joint repairs, curb replacements, paving, striping and sidewalk repairs. Traffic will be reduced to one lane for the duration of the project.

The arrivals roadway (lower level) work consists of having steel reinforcement beams installed to the upper deck, roadway milling and overlay improvements, in addition to repairing structural columns and concrete. During construction, traffic will be restricted to one lane from 1 to 8 a.m. each weekday.

To assist passengers using the terminal there will be variable message signs in place to direct traffic into the proper lanes for both levels of roadway.

To lessen traffic on the terminal's roadways, people coming to the airport to pick up arriving passengers are advised to use the Cell Phone Lot on Holtz Drive, where they can wait in their car for a cell call notifying them their passenger has their luggage and is ready to be picked up.

In addition, use of the airport's radio system is advised for people heading to the BNIA. Construction and parking updates will be available by tuning the car radio to 1580 AM. The signal is best within three miles of the airport. The airport's website buffaloairport.com will also be used to communicate timely information as necessary.

Passengers are advised to allow themselves additional time when using the airport during the construction period. The recommended time to arrive in the terminal for a departing flight is 90 minutes prior to departure.

The project is scheduled to be completed in August.

Buffalo, NY:The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that they have reached a licensing agreement with Funtime After Dark, LLC, to be the NFTA's waterfront concert promoter for the 2012 summer season.

NFTA Commissioner Howard A. Zemsky said, “We are excited about this opportunity to increase public access to the waterfront, and the selection of a designated promoter will free up staff time, allowing them to fully focus on our core mission of serving the transportation needs of our customers.”

Chris Ring, a Funtime partner said, “It's always exciting to bring great concerts to Buffalo, but what's even more special is the fact that we get to be a part of the bigger picture, which is to get more people downtown and enjoy the beautiful Buffalo waterfront. We hope that these concerts will help do just that."

Peter G. Demakos, NFTA commissioner and chairman of the authority's Property Risk Committee said, “We are pleased to have come to an agreement with experienced promoters who will provide top notch entertainment for people to enjoy at one of the best venues in our community.”

Funtime plans on using the seven acre site located on the outer harbor in the vicinity of the former Pier Restaurant, to hold concerts from a variety of musical genres including alternative, Canadian, southern and folk rock. Ticket prices will be range from $30 pre-sale to $100 for a VIP ticket. Parking charges will range from $5 to $10.

The agreement allows Funtime After Dark, LLC, (Chris Ring, Artie Kwitchoff and Donnie Kutzbach) to hold up to four concerts this summer at the outer harbor, with the possibility of conducting added concerts. In addition to the $20,000 licensing fee, the NFTA will receive 20 percent of all parking revenues, approve in advance the promoter's security/safety plan and receive an additional security deposit to ensure a thorough clean up of the site following each performance.

Buffalo, NY: The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro will be showcasing its first two newly rebuilt rail cars and placing them into service Friday, March 9 after a brief inaugural ride ceremony.

Rail cars 114 and 123, the first two of 27 rail cars that will each receive a $1.5 million top to bottom transformation, carried passengers for the first time today from LaSalle Station to Theater Station, where celebratory remarks were offered in the lobby of Shea's Performing Arts Center.

Henry M. Sloma, NFTA acting Chairman commented, “We are fully committed to providing our customers with the safest and most modern rail cars possible. These rebuilt vehicles accomplish that goal and our investment will add 25-years to the life of each car.”

Eunice A. Lewin, Chairwoman of the NFTA's Surface Transportation Committee said, “I am definitely very pleased that our beautiful new cars are operating and serving our customers. We can now move forward with plans to provide our over 6 million annual rail customers with one of the most modern light rail systems in the nation.”

The two cars have undergone a complete reconstruction in Dansville, NY, where AnsaldoBreda Inc. a unit of AnsaldoBreda S.p.A of Italy has been making wholesale improvements to the cars.

Giancarlo Fantappiè, AnsaldoBreda President and CEO commented, “We are very happy that this achievement is being met with the cooperation of the entire Rehabilitation Team; NFTA, AnsaldoBreda, suppliers, etc… As we move forward with the work on the remaining vehicles, we remain fully committed to the continued cooperation and successful completion of this project.”

Each vehicle is equipped with a host of new safety features, passenger amenities and mechanical upgrades as part of the $45 million project. Enhanced passenger features include new colored seats and shells, HVAC components, interior emergency audio system, brighter energy efficient overhead lighting, anti-slip coating on door thresholds and interior/exterior LED signage. All cars will become uniform in appearance as the current orange and brown color scheme transitions to an all white background accented with silver and blue trim.

Americans with Disabilities related improvements include flashing lights at all doors, new gong sounds to signal the opening and closing of doors and automatic passenger stop announcements/LED displays to assist hearing and visually impaired passengers

The approximately 22,880 riders who use Metro Rail each weekday may not notice the myriad mechanical and safety improvements that each vehicle has received, but they are equally as significant to the project. Each car is now equipped with new suspensions, rebuilt gearboxes, air compression system, improved breaking system, overhauled traction motors, refurbished trucks with new wheels and 35,000 feet of new electrical wiring.

The operators' compartment has also been retooled with a new ergonomic design, improved HVAC system, enhanced electric window wipers and side window along with a new seat design for operator comfort.

A third rebuilt rail car is expected to be delivered in approximately seven months and will be required to undergo testing and 600 miles of commissioning, which is expected to take three to four months. There will be four rail cars in the rebuild cycle, starting a process whereby one completed car will be sent to Buffalo with Metro sending an additional car to Dansville until all remaining 25 cars are rebuilt. All cars are required to be completed within 36 months from the date of accepting the first two.

The BNIA has entered into a three-year agreement with Advanced Wireless Group, LLC, to provide free high-speed Internet service to its customers. Advance Wireless, a leading provider of Wi-Fi wireless and wired high-speed Internet access has airport installations across the country including Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Indianapolis, Omaha and San Francisco.

Carmen A. Granto, NFTA commissioner and chairman of the authority's Aviation Committee said, “Staying connected and productive while away from the office or home has become essential to today's traveler. We are pleased to now be able to provide our customers with free connectivity. Passengers can sit down, relax, enjoy a meal, all while downloading files, sending e-mails, or checking the status of their connecting flight from their laptop or PDA at no cost to them.”

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro Rail will operate modified service Sunday, Jan. 22, from approximately 7 p.m. through the end of the day due to maintenance work being performed in this segment of the system.

The outbound track will be out of service between Erie Canal Harbor Station and Humboldt Hospital Station. As a result, all service either inbound or outbound in this section will be provided from the inbound side.

Metro will have rail supervisors in the system to assist customers, there will be messages posted and public address announcements will be made at the stations to inform customers of the temporary change in service.

There may be minimal delays; customers are advised to please plan accordingly.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro Rail will extend service an additional two hours Saturday, Dec. 31, to accommodate passengers attending the Annual New Year's Eve Ball Drop at Roosevelt Square and the downtown First Night Buffalo celebration.

Train service will run continuously, making stops at all stations during the extended service period. Trains will be on 20 minute intervals, with special trains intermingled as needed. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced it will host a Master Plan Update public workshop to present recommendations of future long-term improvements for the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Buffalo, NY . . .

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that the Niagara Falls International Airport has almost doubled the number of parking spaces in Lot 3.

In an effort to accommodate the ever-increasing number of passengers using the NFIA, an additional 500 parking spaces have been added to the 600 that were created this past January, when the overflow lot was first opened.

Lot 3 located just south and across the street from the terminal on Niagara Falls Blvd. is fenced, paved, lighted, has shelters in place to provide protection from the elements and is patrolled by NFTA police.

Free shuttle service to and from the terminal is provided during regularly scheduled flights. The lot is opened after main lots, 1 and 2 become full. Lots 1 and 2 are on airport property, each with 250 spaces, and are accessed via the airport’s main entrance.

All of the parking facilities are operated by Standard Parking, under an existing contract that is in place for services rendered at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Parking rates are $5 per day with a maximum weekly rate of $25, which is paid upon entry. The airport now as a total of 1,600 parking spaces.

The terminal is serviced by Allegiant Air (starting Dec. 15), Direct Air and Spirit Airlines. Flight schedules and destinations for all three carriers can be accessed via the NFIA’s website at niagarafallsairport.com.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that construction work involving the two-tier roadway at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport is scheduled to start Monday, Sept. 26.

The $1.4 million Airport Improvement Project will involve both the arrivals and departures roadways. The work will consist of installing steel reinforcement to the upper deck roadway, in addition to repairing structural columns and concrete.

During construction the arrivals roadway (lower level) will be closed from 3 to 8 a.m., with lane restrictions at other times. There will be variable message signs in place to direct traffic into the proper lanes for both levels of roadway.

Passengers are advised to allow themselves extra time when using the airport. The recommended time to arrive for a departing flight is 90 minutes prior to departure.

The project will continue as long as the weather permits, with the remaining work to be completed in the spring.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced they have a new comprehensive agreement with Erie Community College to participate in Metro's College University Unlimited Access Pass program.

ECC becomes the fifth local college to have a Metro unlimited access pass program for all of their undergraduate students. The program provides all of ECC's approximately 15,000 undergraduate students with unlimited access to Metro Bus, Rail and Paratransit services seven days a week.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “We are very excited about having all ECC students participate in Metro's Unlimited Ride program. They will now be able to experience the many advantages of using Metro to travel not only to classes, but at any time they want, to all of the places Metro travels in Erie and Niagara counties.”

“ I would like to thank the NFTA and their directors for providing all ECC students the opportunity to take advantage of unlimited use of all Metro bus and rail services. This service will give easy access to all three ECC campuses from anywhere in Erie County. A special thank you to NFTA Executive Director Minkel for working with ECC to provide this convenience to our students” said Jack Quinn, President of Erie Community College.

The new one-year expanded agreement includes all undergraduate students taking classes at ECC's three campuses starting Sept.1 through May 31, 2012. The previous agreements, which included primarily City campus students, started in 2007.

Metro will provide ECC with student photo identification cards encoded with a magnetic strip that when swiped through the bus fare box or shown to a Metro Rail ticket inspector will provide convenient, unlimited access. The new agreement calls for each student to pay $30 per semester.

As part of the agreement Metro will offer additional MetroLink Route 211 fixed route open door service, which will operate weekdays between the City campus and both North and South campuses from approximately 7 a.m. to 5:20 p.m. The service will also run Saturdays from City campus to South campus between 10 a.m. and 4:50 p.m., providing access to all shopping areas near the McKinley Mall.

ECC has agreed to provide advertising space for Metro to use that will include a outdoor billboard on Ellicott Street across from the college, campus digital signage, website advertising and inclusion in the their promotional materials.

“We laud ECC for adding the additional two campuses to the program so that the entire undergraduate body will now have unlimited access to the whole Metro system to travel throughout the region,” Minkel added.

The Metro Bus and Rail system includes 324 buses and 27 rail cars, generating service for approximately 105,000 people a day in Erie and Niagara counties.

Buffalo, NY . . .

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority commemorated the 30th Anniversary of the Aircraft Rescue Firefighting unit at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport today during a recognition program for active and retired firefighters at the BNIA firehouse. The BNIA ARFF unit got its start in March 1981, when it was created as the Public Safety department by the NFTA board of commissioners to handle both safety and security functions at the then Greater Buffalo International Airport.

In April 1981, the NFTA's Public Safety unit assumed control of the airport's fire department duties from the Buffalo Fire department. The unit assumed control of the safety aspect by staffing four security checkpoints in the east and west terminals with 42 public safety officers and became the fire department for the Greater Buffalo International Airport.

Henry M. Sloma, NFTA acting chairman said, “It has been a distinguished 30 years for the men and women of the department. They have grown from a small unit assigned to public safety, into a multi-functional department capable of responding not only to aviation related emergencies, but to mutual aid calls for assistance combating major off-airport fires in the region.”

From its humble beginnings in 1981, the unit has progressed into an elite firefighting department capable of responding to all types of aviation related emergences, in addition to medical emergencies in the terminal such as cardiac arrests. In 2008, members of the department saved two passengers from cardiac arrest in two separate occasions just two months apart.

When Continental Express flight #3407 crashed in Clarence Center, NY in February 2009, the department was one of the first units on the scene with resources, including truck F4 and its fire suppressant foam dispensing capabilities. Members of the department spent the next five days helping secure the crash site.

In addition, in June the department responded to a multiple alarm fire in Depew, NY at the Twin Village Recycling facility, again with truck F4 dispensing fire suppressant foam to quell the hot fire.

Most recently, the City of Buffalo Fire department called upon the BNIA ARFF unit this past July for assistance in fighting a stubborn chemical warehouse fire at Niagara Lubricant. Once again, fire truck F4 was dispatched and assisted in bringing the fire under control by dispensing 400 gallons of fire suppressant foam on the structure.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “I am extremely proud of the quality and professionalism each man and woman brings to the department. They place their lives at risk each time they respond to a call, which they do without hesitation. This takes dedication, commitment and professionalism of the highest level. I am delighted at what they have accomplished and look forward to what they will achieve over the next 30 years.”

The ARFF department now has a complement of 41 firefighters. The unit trains each day in various aspects of firefighting and conducts periodic tabletop exercises and drills at the airfield with area first responders to ensure that when they do work together in the field they are all using the same techniques and methods to maximize their collective efforts.

Chris Putney, Chief of the ARFF unit and a 30-year veteran said, “I am extremely proud of the exemplary work and effort the men and women of the department put forth each and every day to keep the airport safe. Doing so takes dedication, commitment and professionalism of the highest level. I am proud of what we have accomplished as a group and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”

Rev. Joe Bayne, OFM Conv., Chief Chaplin, Erie County Emergency Services offered a blessing for the firefighters continued safety of the men and women of the department. In addition, a 30th Anniversary commemorative pin was presented to each active and retired member of the department whom were present.

Further, the program featured a tour of the firehouse and a field demonstration of the firefighting capabilities of fire truck F4 affectionately known as the “beast” of the department.

State said, "In addition to handling her current litigation caseload, Brunette will perform General Counsel duties in my absence and play a significant role in implementing compliance initiatives being developed by the authority. This restructuring of the General Counsel's office will improve our ability to serve the authority and the public and I congratulate Vicky on her appointment."

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro will once again provide complementary trolley service for guests staying at participating Niagara Falls motels and hotels beginning Friday, May 13. The 55T Niagara Falls Blvd./Pine Avenue trolley bus will travel between and downtown Niagara Falls, serving Niagara Falls Boulevard and Pine Avenue.

Service will operate weekends May 13 - 31 and Nov. 24 -Dec. 31, and seven days a week from June 1 - Oct. 31. The service will operate from 9 a.m. until midnight and on all holidays during these service periods.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director, said, “We have two new trolley buses in our fleet this year. They are larger, so we'll be able to better serve our passengers at peak times throughout the year.”

Patrons will receive their trolley day passes that are affixed with a sequential number, upon request at participating hotels and motels. The pass, supported by the local bed tax, allows pass holders free access to the trolley service, and the entire Metro Bus and Rail system in Niagara and Erie counties, on the date the trolley pass is punched by the Metro operator.

Individuals without a trolley day pass may ride the service by paying Metro's regular adult fare of $1.75, 75 cents for children (5-11 yrs.), seniors (65 yrs. and over), disabled and Medicare clients with valid I.D. All other Metro passes are also valid. Children four and under ride free, limit three children per fare paying adult.

Special Route 55T trolley stop signs along the route indicate where riders can board a trolley. In downtown Niagara Falls, the 55T trolley stops are located at The Aquarium of Niagara, Rainbow Blvd., Michael O'Laughlin Drive, Rainbow Blvd., Main Street and near the Seneca Niagara Casino at Third Street and Old Falls Street.

In addition, stops are located at the City Market on Pine Avenue and 17th Street, the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, The Summit, several motels along Niagara Falls Boulevard and the Como Restaurant in Little Italy on Pine Avenue and 22nd Street.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that it has streamlined its Instant Update online messaging program to make it easier for individuals to receive e-mails and text messages regarding NFTA information.

People can sign up at the NFTA's website nfta.com to subscribe to receive status changes for categories such as Metro Bus and Rail service, Metro Rider Alerts for any and all routes, Buffalo and Niagara Falls International Airport updates, Paratransit notices, employment postings and slip holder information from the NFTA Boat Harbor.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that they have selected Thomas R. George to be the Authority's new Director of Surface Transportation. Henry M. Sloma, NFTA acting chairman said, “We are pleased to have an individual such as Tom join our team. He possesses strong leadership qualities, knowledge of Metro's operations and the local transportation landscape and is eager to lead Metro at this very important time in its history.”

George, 49, was selected after a nationwide search to fill the position that has been vacant since the retirement of Walter D. Zmuda in November 2010. For the last eight years George has been the Executive Director of the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition.

In his new position George will be responsible for directing the overall Surface Transportation Business Center operation for Metro Bus and Rail and Paratransit services to ensure optimal mobility for the Buffalo Niagara region, in addition to equipment and vehicle maintenance, procurement, financial planning and administration.

As NITTEC's first executive director of the only Canadian - U.S. coalition of its kind, he brought together 14 state, provincial and local transportation agencies in concert with U.S. and Canadian federal authorities to address transportation and mobility opportunities throughout the region and across the international border.

During his tenure at the bi-national agency he oversaw the development of a Regional Concept of Transportation Operations for the Buffalo Niagara region. The multi mode regional operations plan was developed to establish collaboration between all regional transportation agencies.

In addition, he worked with all traffic operations activities throughout the state of New York and Ontario to establish and maintain a consistent approach to traffic management, response protocols, emergency preparedness and traveler information, including the development of integrated systems for data sharing.

He is a graduate of Michigan Technological University where he earned a Bachelors of Science Civil Engineering degree and is a Licensed Professional Engineer.

George will start his new position May 11 at a salary of $125,000. He resides in Akron, NY with his wife and two children.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced the Buffalo Niagara International Airport received a Balchen/Post Award for Outstanding Achievement at the recent 45th Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium.

The Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives recognized the BNIA's “snow removal team” with a First Place Award in the medium commercial airport category. All categories of airports - Commercial, General Aviation and Military compete for the awards. This is the 35th consecutive year that awards have been presented and the sixth time the BNIA has been so honored, with the last recognition being for the 2007-08 winter.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director, said, “I am extremely proud of our team of snow removal professionals based on the reliable and consistent job they do in keeping our runways safe and open to accommodate aviation during winter storms.”

Nominations for consideration come from airlines, pilots, general aviation officials, hotel owners, corporate pilots and ground transportation operators. An independent selection committee screens the recommendations and makes the selections in various categories based on airport size, which is determined by the number of flights in and out of the airport during the year. In making their selections, the committee considered not only the crew's ability to keep the airport runways free of ice and snow, but also equipment readiness, personnel training, and overall safety awareness.

In spite of 111 inches of snow falling at the BNIA this past winter, runways at the BNIA were never closed. “This speaks volumes about the dedication and ability of our airfield personnel who work around the clock, including being away from their families on holidays and missing family functions while working to maintain our runways,” Minkel added.

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is hosting the 45th Annual Snow Symposium April 17-20 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Organizers expect 350 airport professionals, responsible for runway operations from around the world to attend.

Kimberley A. Minkel, Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, executive director, will address the conference Monday, April 18 at 8:30 a.m. speaking about the economic and safety concerns that make snow, slush and ice mitigation so significant and the importance of developing strategies. In addition, she will speak to the BNIA's successful subsurface-engineered wetland glycol treatment project.

One of the featured speakers will be William R. Vanecek, the director of aviation for the NFTA, where he oversees all business and operational facets of both the Buffalo and Niagara Falls International Airports. Mr. Vanecek will be presenting lessons learned from the airport's role in responding to the crash of Flight 3407 in Clarence Center, NY.

This marks the 26th consecutive year the symposium is being hosted by the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Thomas Dames, symposium chairman said, “The site selection committee continues to be very impressed with Buffalo. The Convention and Visitors Bureau, the area hotels and the NFTA all work together to create an inviting, friendly atmosphere for the guests.”

“A snowstorm can cost a major airport more than a quarter of a million dollars in removal alone. The cost of delays compounds that number. None of which compares to the potential safety risks ice and snow can create. The chance for snow removal teams from around the world to exchange ideas and best practices is invaluable,” Minkel added.

One of the main events of the symposium is the presentation of the Balchen/Post Awards, which are given to airport snow-control teams that have demonstrated determination and excellence in keeping their respective airport runways open and safe during winter storms. Presentations are scheduled for Wednesday, April 20 as part of the 12:30 p.m. luncheon.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, operator of the Niagara Falls International Airport, announced today that the airport has opened a cell phone lot to assist people waiting to pick up inbound passengers.

The lot is located just south of the entrance to the main lot in front of the new terminal. It provides free parking where people can wait in their vehicle until they receive a call on their cell phone informing them their passengers are ready to be picked up in front of the terminal.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that the General Counsel Selection Committee has unanimously selected David J. State as its new General Counsel.

Henry M. Sloma, NFTA Chairman said, “Today's selection was extremely difficult. The committee had before it four well qualified individuals who all possessed impressive credentials, but after a lengthy deliberation David was our collective choice.”

State, 48, is currently an assistant state attorney general, a position he has held since Aug. 2007. Prior to that he was an administrative law judge with the New State Office of Temporary Disability and a JAG Officer (Major) for the Trial Counsel, 42nd Infantry Division.

Howard A. Zemsky, committee chairman said, “I want to thank my fellow commissioners for their time and commitment through the entire vetting process. As a result of their combined efforts, we were able to unanimously agree on an extremely talented and well qualified individual.”

State has previous experience as legal counsel to numerous boards and agencies including the Buffalo Common Council, Preservation Board, Elevator Safety Review Board and the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority.

An Iraq veteran, he served from May 2004 to Jan. 2006 when he was mobilized to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and served with the Army Judge Advocate General Corps in Iraq. In addition, he holds faculty positions at the University of Buffalo where he teaches Urban Development Law and Policy and at Erie Community College where he instructs on Business Law I and II.

Upon learning of his selection State said, “I am extremely pleased to have been selected from such a talented group of individuals. I am looking forward with great anticipation to working at the NFTA as it gives me an opportunity to continue my involvement in public service, which has been such a big part of my life.”

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that the hospitality ambassadors at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport will celebrate their 11th anniversary Tuesday, March 15 during an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Historical Site, 641 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, NY.

Approximately 80 volunteers ranging in age from 20 to 80, act as regional “goodwill ambassadors” by providing friendly assistance and helpful information to passengers and guests of the BNIA. The ambassadors, clad in their distinctive blue blazers, assist with directions to local and regional attractions, lodging details, information regarding public transit and in general, act as “liaisons” of goodwill for the region.

Kimberley A. Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “Our ambassadors are one of the reasons why our airport is deemed to be so user friendly. While the design of the airport has won awards, in the final analysis, it is our people who create the positive difference in the operation. The ambassadors have become essential in our efforts to be one of the best airports in the country.”

Henry McCartney, Executive Director of Preservation Buffalo Niagara, will address the group on the significance of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Conference, which is coming to Buffalo in October will have on the Buffalo Niagara region. “The ambassadors will play a key role in helping ensure visitors feel welcome and create a dynamic lasting first impression of our community,” McCartney said.

While many airports have volunteer programs, the Buffalo airport ranks in the top 10 for the number of hours volunteered. In 2010 over 8,900 hours of volunteered service was provided, which has an economic value of approximately $108,000. Each volunteer who qualifies will be awarded a President's Volunteer Award from the Points of Light Institute as part of the national program recognizing and celebrating the importance of volunteer service.

Several new Ambassadors will be singled out for reaching the Bronze level in the Presidential Points of Light recognition program. This level is achieved by donating 100-249 hours in a calendar year.

“With gas prices higher than ever and financial concerns affecting everyone, now is the time to save money and ride Metro Bus and Rail,” suggests Kimberley A. Minkel, Executive Director of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.

Nationally, nearly 2.5 billion trips were taken on public transportation in the third quarter of 2010, according to the American Public Transportation Association. As gas prices continue to approach $4 per gallon, people are looking for ways to reduce their commuting costs and riding Metro provides the easiest way to reach that goal.

Locally, Metro Bus and Rail combined had 27.3 million boardings last year, its highest total since 2008. As gas prices rise, more people are using public transportation as a means of reducing their daily commuting costs as is validated by a 3 percent increase in ridership over the past four months. Switching from driving to riding Metro for even a few of their trips is a proven way for individuals to cut monthly and yearly transportation costs.

Metro can now answer the question many people are asking . . . How much can I save by using public transit? Metro's website at nfta.com/metro features a user-friendly calculator that lets people insert their commuting data such as distance traveled to work each day, cost of gas, number of days commuting to work, cost of parking, mileage obtained by one's car and with the click of the mouse the program will compute the yearly savings that can be realized by taking Metro.

Using average variables for a daily roundtrip commute to work (40 miles), mpg (23), cost of gas ($3.70 gal), and parking ($7 per day) the person would pay approximately $3,493 per year to drive to work. Using a Metro $4 Day Pass, the person would pay $1,040, achieving a yearly savings of $2,453 according to the calculator.

An additional savings of approximately 30 percent can be achieved by using Metro's Advantage Plan to purchase a monthly systemwide Metro pass. Full details on how to participate in the Advantage Plan can be found online at nfta.com/metro.

“As uncertainty in other parts of the world persists, and Americans continue to suffer economic woes, making the change to public transit today gives individuals the opportunity to lower their transportation costs, and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint, which benefits everyone,” Minkel said.

In addition, the website has a Carbon Savings Calculator that will help people estimate the potential reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in terms of pounds one can achieve by switching part or all of their travel to public transportation.

Commuting by public transportation reduces carbon emissions by 20 lbs per day, 4,800 lbs. per year, which is more than if you weatherized your home, converted to fluorescent bulbs and replaced an old refrigerator combined.

To assist people who might be new to Metro they can go online and use Metro's trip planner to assist in planning their trip using the bus or rail, in addition to showing all Metro schedules and route maps that are easy to download and print for future use.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that it has received the delivery of its first newly refurbished Metro rail car at its Yard and Shops facility on Ohio St. in Buffalo, NY.

The first of 27 rail cars to receive a $1.5 million makeover arrived Thursday, Feb. 3 after making the 100-mile trip atop a flatbed truck from Hornell, NY, where AnsaldoBreda Inc. a unit of AnsaldoBreda S.p.A of Italy has been making wholesale improvements to the car.

Eunice A. Lewin, Chairwoman of the NFTA's Surface Transportation Committee said, “We are definitely very pleased that the first car has arrived. While it has been a longer than expected journey to arrive at this point, I am confident we can now move forward with our plans to provide our over 6 million annual customers with one of the most modern light rail systems in the nation.”

Giancarlo Fantappie, President & CEO, AnsaldoBreda, Inc. said, “We are very pleased to deliver this first rail car to the NFTA. The second rebuilt car will arrive at the end of Feb. While there have been issues in the past that have plagued this project, those issues are now behind us and we are totally confident that this milestone represents a critical juncture for our relationships with the NFTA as it will allow us to move forward rebuilding their entire fleet of light rail vehicles. This first rebuilt vehicle incorporates unique enhancements and innovative solutions that will provide a higher level of safety, comfort and reliability to the citizens of Buffalo.”

Minkel, NFTA executive director said, “Metro Rail provides the most environmentally efficient, pocketbook friendly and reliable mode of transportation for thousands of people traveling in and out of Buffalo each and every day of the year. We are pleased to be able to provide these new rail cars so our riders can enjoy a safe and comfortable ride on Metro Rail for many years to come.”

Each vehicle is being equipped with a host of new safety features, passenger amenities and mechanical upgrades as part of the $40 million project. Enhanced passengers features include new colored seats and shells, HVAC components, interior emergency audio system, brighter energy efficient overhead lighting, anti-slip coating on door thresholds and interior/exterior LED signage. All cars will become uniform in appearance as the current orange and brown color scheme transitions to an all white background accented with silver and blue trim.

Americans with Disabilities related improvements include flashing lights at all doors, new gong sounds to signal the opening and closing of doors and automatic passenger stop announcements/LED displays to assist hearing and visually impaired passengers. In addition, an inter-car barrier at both ends of the rail car has been designed to prevent blind passengers from falling into the track bed or walking between cars in the above ground section.

The 22,880 riders who use Metro Rail each weekday may not notice the myriad mechanical and safety improvements that each vehicle is receiving, but they are equally as significant to the project. Each car is being equipped with new suspensions, rebuilt gearboxes, air compression system, improved breaking system, overhauled traction motors, refurbished trucks with new wheels and 35,000 feet of new electrical wiring.

The operators' compartment has also been retooled with a new ergonomic design, improved HVAC system, enhanced electric window wipers and side window along with a new seat design for operator comfort.

A second rail car is expected to be delivered mid-Feb., at which point the two cars will be put through a 600-mile “testing and commissioning” process. The testing is expected to take three to four months. Upon a satisfactory conclusion, Metro will ship four cars to Hornell, starting a process whereby one completed car will be sent to Buffalo with Metro sending an additional car to Hornell until all 27 cars are finished. All cars are required to be completed within 36 months from the date of accepting the first two.

Boardings up 5 percent

Buffalo, NY . . .

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that its Metro Bus and Rail division saw an increase of 1.2 million passenger boardings in 2010 when compared to 2009. Representing a 5 percent increase, it is the second largest one-year gain; surpassed only by an 8 percent increase in 2008.

Metro bus and rail combined had 27.3 million boardings in 2010, compared to 26 million in 2009. This represents the most boarding since 2008 when there were 28.2 million boardings, and is the second busiest year Metro has had in the past eight years.

“There are number of factors involved,” said NFTA Commissioner Eunice A. Lewin, chairwoman of the Surface Transportation Committee. “The restructuring of Metro routes to provide more service in its core areas has begun to pay dividends. Additionally, more people are seeing public transportation as a way to reduce the cost of their commute in light of the almost daily increasing price of gas and by eliminating their parking fees.”

As part of its recently applied Service Restructuring and Simplified Fare Plan, Metro streamlined its fare structure Sept. 1 by eliminating its four-zone system, and implementing a one-fare per boarding standard of $1.75 reducing the cost of a monthly system wide pass to $64, making Metro easier to use and less expensive to ride.

Further, the entire route system was restructured Oct. 31 by way of adjusting routes and rebalancing service levels, making the bus system more efficient and cost effective. Bus frequencies were increased on the heaviest used routes, and operated less frequently over lesser-used routes. In addition, Metro Rail Sunday service was increased to start earlier and run later.

Metro's Advantage program continues to be popular as a way to reduce transportation costs. Currently 103 organizations participate in this pre-tax arrangement that allows both employees and employers to save money. Employees pay for their monthly Metro pass using pre-tax dollars, saving approximately 30 percent each month. Money spent on pre-tax transit expenditures reduces an employer's obligations to federal and state income tax, some unemployment taxes, and FICA.

"We are seeing the positive effects of the changes we made in the fall, but we are far from finished. We are going to continue monitoring ridership on all of our routes and continue listening to our customers in an ongoing effort to ensure we are providing the most efficient public transit service possible,” Lewin said.

Kimberley A. Minkel to Lead Transportation Agency

Buffalo, NY . . .

The Board of Commissioners of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today the selection of Kimberley A. Minkel as the agency’s new Executive Director.

Minkel, 45, started at the NFTA in October 2002 as its Director of Health, Safety, and Environmental Quality. She has over 20 years of experience in the environmental and safety regulations business along with experience in compliance managing. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Niagara University in 1988 and an MBA with a concentration in management from Canisius College in 1995.

Henry M. Sloma, NFTA acting chairman said, “Today’s unanimous vote by the Board speaks volumes about the confidence we have collectively regarding Kim’s ability to lead this multifaceted agency. She is a person of integrity, who knows the inner workings of the NFTA, the community and has the necessary qualifications to move the agency forward.”

As director of the authority’s HSEQ department, she has worked to ensure the safety and protection of its workers, riders, the public and the environment. Recently, she oversaw the completion of an award winning environmental project for the Buffalo Niagara International Airport that uses wetland treatment technology for treating spent deicing fluid in storm water runoff. The BNIA is the first airport in the United States to use such a process. This project was awarded the Diamond Award in the Environmental Category by the NY branch of the American Council of Engineering Companies and a very prestigious Honor Award by the U.S. national ACEC.

“I am honored and humbled at being selected to be the new executive director. I am looking forward to working closely with our 1,500 dedicated employees to ensure that the NFTA is doing all we can to provide the highest quality and safest transportation services possible. I am also looking forward to meeting and getting to know more of our elected officials, and regional stakeholders to make certain that we are engaged at all levels going forward, Minkel said.”

Minkel began her career in 1989 at Sevenson Environmental as the Health and Safety Manager, Data Information Manager, and Quality Assurance Officer. She was responsible for managing all field and laboratory data, initiating system audits, and conducted employee safety evaluations.

In 1992, she became Manager of Environmental, Health, and Safety for Washington Mills Electro Minerals Corp. Following this, in 1999 she became Manager of Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Compliance at Xerox Corporation. In both of these positions, she ensured compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines and managed employee accidents, including prevention, investigation, and behavior modification programs.

She is a member of many professional organizations, including Western New York Safety Advisory Committee and Who’s Who of Professional Management. In the past, she served on the Board of Directors for the Peace Bridge Authority, the City of Niagara Falls N.F.B. Development Corporation and she is a 2007 graduate of Leadership Buffalo. She has also co-authored several papers dealing with innovative approaches for managing storm water runoff at airports.

Ms. Minkel resides in Lancaster with her husband and two children.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Phase II of Metro's Service Restructuring and Simplified Fare plan is on schedule to go into effect Sunday, Oct. 31 when changes to Metro routes and schedules will be implemented.

“Metro is adjusting routes and rebalancing service levels to make the whole bus and rail system more efficient and cost effective,” said NFTA Commissioner Eunice A. Lewin. “This is necessary due to continued financial pressure on our budget, less available operating assistance and changes in riding patterns.” The adjustments come after a thorough yearlong operational and financial evaluation of the entire Metro system.

Passengers can now see changes that have been made to routes and schedules as they are finalized by going online to nfta.com/metro. Each route is listed in a special section, showing the current level of service and what adjustments will be made as of Oct. 31. In addition, informational brochures will be available on buses, at Metro transportation centers and in rail stations.

The modifications are designed to improve service for Metro riders, however, a minority of riders will be impacted by some of the changes, though most of the higher ridership core routes, which carry a majority of Metro's passengers will have little change, except for adjustments to service levels. The goal is to have routes run at regular intervals of 15 minutes in certain areas and during peak ridership times, or every 30 or 60 minutes during the evening and weekends.

Buses will run more frequently over the heaviest used parts of a route, and less frequently over the lesser-used parts. Suburban service has been redesigned to be more efficient and easier to understand with some new route names and numbers and fewer confusing route and trip variations. Some route segments and two entire routes, #51 and #56, which have a history of low ridership will be discontinued. Express routes have also been revised to be more reflective of historical ridership patterns.

Metro Rail will increase Sunday service starting Oct. 31, as service hours will be expanded to operate from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at 20-minute intervals. There will be no change to weekday or Saturday service.

Lewin added, “Perfecting the restructuring of Metro's system will take some time. It is more of a process than an event. The process starts now, making the system financially stronger, more efficient, cost-effective and ultimately better for our riders.”

SPECIAL INFORMATION: As part of the drill, emergency vehicles will be responding to the airport. They will NOT be responding with lights and sirens, but may turn on their lights once at the scene. The sight of emergency vehicles converging to the airport may concern people living in the neighborhood, using the facility or to those having family working at the airport.

It would be very helpful if you could inform the public in advance that this is a planned drill and there is no reason for concern.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro would provide service on the 36 Hamburg and 14 Abbott bus routes to the Erie County Fair & Exposition Wednesday, Aug. 11 through Sunday the 22.

On weekdays, Route 36 Hamburg buses depart for the Fair from Mohawk and Ellicott Streets, starting at 8:37 a.m. and approximately every hour thereafter with the last bus leaving at 9:43 p.m.Buses returning to Buffalo start departing the grounds at 10:11 a.m. and continue almost hourly up to 11:02 p.m. Buses stop at both McKinley Avenue and South Park entrances.

Saturdays, the first 36 Hamburg leaves downtown Buffalo at 9:15 a.m. The last bus leaves the fairgrounds for Buffalo at 9:30 p.m. Sunday service to the Fair starts at 11 a.m. with the last bus leaving the Fair at 9:50 p.m.

Additionally, the 14 Abbott bus would provide service to the Fair on Saturdays only, with three round trips serving only the McKinley Avenue entrance. The first 14 Abbott leaves downtown at 9:10 a.m. from Mohawk Street and Washington Street, with the last bus leaving at 1:10 p.m. Departing buses start at 10:03 a.m. with the last bus leaving the Fair at 2:02 p.m.

Metro fare to the fairground is $2.35 for adults and $1.05 for children five to 11 years old, senior citizens (65 & older) and the disabled with approved identification. Children four and under ride free with a fare-paying adult (limit three children with fare-paying adult.)

Rider Alerts listing the outbound schedule to the Fair will be posted on all buses and in Metro facilities.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced it has installed eight touch-screen information kiosks at strategic points throughout Buffalo Niagara to provide current information about NFTA services.

The stand-alone computer terminals provide online information about Metro bus and rail service, the Niagara Falls and Buffalo airports, the NFTA Boat Harbor, and even the NFTA itself. Job postings and other details regarding the Authority are right at the users fingertips. In addition, the kiosks provide access to the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau and Niagara USA Web sites, giving users an easy, reliable overview of the region.

Lawrence M. Meckler, NFTA executive director said, “Our goal is to assist people who are looking for public transportation, and general tourist information, where and when they need it most. The kiosks will help keep people informed even when they don't have a laptop or smart phone handy.”

The user-friendly kiosks are located at Metro's University Station, Portage Road Transportation Center, Niagara Falls Transportation Center, the Metropolitan Transportation Center and the Buffalo and Niagara Falls Airports.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced today that the Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to adopt recommended service adjustments and a simplified fare structure for Metro Bus and Rail in conjunction with its Service Restructuring and Fare Analysis/Strategic Assessment Study.

Over the past year, consultants from Transportation Management & Design, Inc., together with Metro's service planning department, conducted a comprehensive strategic assessment of how Metro delivers its service and conducted numerous public informational meetings and hearings to obtain suggestions from the community. The final recommendations reflect findings from the inclusive study and stakeholders' comments on how to make Metro easy and more efficient.

Eunice A. Lewin, NFTA commissioner and chairwoman of the Surface Transportation Committee said, “The service and fare analysis assessment is one of the most meaningful projects Metro has undertaken. When implemented, the restructuring of our service deliverables will offer more options to riders, an uncomplicated fare structure and improve overall operational efficiency, resulting in a more economically sustainable Metro system.”

SIMPLIFIED FARE STRUCTURE

Changes to Metro's fare structure will take effect Sept. 1, 2010. The new simplified format maintains the current boarding fare at $1.75, eliminates fare zone charges and bus-to-bus transfers. As a result of eliminating the zones, the cost of a system-wide monthly pass will be reduced from $77 to $64. A system-wide Day pass will continue to be sold for $4.

The sale of bus tokens will cease Sept. 1, except to social service agencies, but will continue to be accepted through August 2013.

Paratransit fares will still be twice the adult cash fare, however, paratransit eligible riders will now be able to travel free on all of Metro's fixed route service. Further, the price of a system-wide PAL 10 and 20-trip pass will be reduced to $29 and $58 from $39 and $79.50 respectively.

In addition, reduced fares will continue to be offered to disabled and Medicare passengers with proper ID, senior citizens 65 and older and children 5-11 yrs. Children four and under ride free with a paying adult, limit three children per paying adult.

SERVICE MODIFICATIONS

The resolution also calls for the restructuring of various Metro routes and route segments to commence Oct. 31, 2010. The major points of change are:

- Reallocation of service to improve frequencies on 15 of Metro's most used routes, with service to operate at a minimum of every 15 minutes during the weekday

- Establish new or renamed and numbered suburban feeder routes

- Extended Metro Rail service on Sunday

- Discontinuance of three routes; 51 Military Summit, 56 River Rd. and the 207 Elmwood Circulator, in addition to segments of other routes, all of which have a history of very low ridership

- The current Paratransit service area and level of service, which is based on Metro's current fixed route system, will remain in effect for 12-months subsequent to any service changes that start Oct. 31

Also, staff has been directed to seek funding to implement another key study recommendation to initiate ridership estimation, basic feasibility and cost benefit analysis of three high level transit investment corridors: Airport/Broadway, Amherst/UB North Campus and Delaware Avenue/Elmwood Avenue emerged as viable candidates for future major transit investment. “The execution of these changes will simplify our Metro system, making it easier to use, thus increasing ridership opportunities for our customers and provide a more user-friendly public transportation system going forward,” Lewin said.

With the SYP passengers can ride as much as they'd like June 25th through Wednesday, September 8th, on any bus or Metro Rail, (excluding only Darien Lake service.) The Summer Youth Pass is $52.50 and available at participating Tops, Wilson Farms, Budwey's, Parkside Pharmacy and Dash's Markets. The Summer Youth Pass also comes with discounts to several area restaurants, shops, and attractions. The savings are so good, the pass almost pays for itself. Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that a portion of Metro Rail service will be suspended on Thursday evenings starting June 10.

In anticipation of large crowds attending the popular Thursday at the Square concerts June 10 through August 12, Metro Rail service will be suspended in the immediate area of the concerts inbound between Lafayette Station and Church Street Station and outbound between Church Street Station and Fountain Plaza Station from approximately 7 to 9 p.m. on each of the 10 dates.

Lawrence M. Meckler, NFTA executive director said, “The Thursday concerts have become very popular, attracting large numbers of people and as a result, warrant precautionary measures. The safety of our customers, employees and the general public is our number one concern.”

Metro will provide free shuttle bus service for its customers between Main Street at Church Street (Church Street Station) and Main Street at Chippewa Street (Fountain Plaza Station) where customers will be able to make a rail connection in each direction.

Regular rail service will operate between Erie Canal Harbor Station and Church Street Station and between Lafayette Station and University Station during the suspended periods.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that it has erected a bus shelter in the LaSalle Center to accommodate passengers using its new Metro service into the plaza.

The placement of the new shelter coincides with Metro starting to serve the Walmart Supercenter in the LaSalle Center located at 1540 Military Rd. in Niagara Falls as of April 16.

Metro’s Route 55, Pine Avenue bus has been rerouted to directly operate to the Walmart store parking lot via the main plaza entrance driveway and exit the parking lot to Niagara Falls Blvd., via 80th Street.

Presently the 55 bus has 68 weekday, 25 Saturday and 19 Sunday trips to the Walmart site to accommodate employees and customers.

Buffalo, NY… The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority will host a luncheon at the Protocol Restaurant in Williamsville, Sunday, May 16 at 1 p.m., to recognize the outstanding safety records of Metro vehicle maintenance workers and Bus and Rail operators. In additional, the Authority will salute employees who reached 25-years with the NFTA.

This year seven operators will be recognized for more than 30-years of safe driving. Fourteen Metro Bus and Rail operators and five maintenance employees will be congratulated for either a 10, 20 or 30-year safety record. In addition, 57 NFTA employees will celebrate a silver anniversary.

Acting NFTA Chairman, Henry M. Sloma said, “These men and women have dedicated a quarter-century to helping the people of Western New York get to work, school, church, a doctor’s appointment or visit loved-ones. It is an honorable achievement in an honorable profession.”

Lawrence M. Meckler, executive director of the NFTA said, “There is no way to understate the importance of safety in this business, so it is a pleasure to thank the men and women who have been able to maintain such incredible safety records.”

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro will once again provide complementary trolley service for guests staying at participating Niagara Falls motels and hotels beginning Friday, May 14. The 55T trolley bus will travel between the Niagara Falls Airport and downtown Niagara Falls, serving Niagara Falls Boulevard and Pine Avenue.

Service will operate weekends only May 14 - May 31 and October 1-11, including Memorial Day and Columbus Day, and expand to seven days a week from June 1 - Sept. 30. Service will operate 9 a.m. until midnight.

Lawrence M. Meckler, NFTA executive director said, “This is a great opportunity for the men and women at Metro to show off the quality, economical transportation we provide here every day, to visitors from around the world.”

Patrons will receive their trolley Day Passes upon request at participating motels and hotels. The 2010 trolley passes will be sequentially numbered in the upper right hand corner. The pass, supported by the local bed tax, allows pass holders free access to the trolley service, and the entire Metro Bus and Rail system in Niagara and Erie counties, on the date the pass is validated by the Metro operator.

Individuals without a trolley Day Pass may ride the service by paying Metro's regular adult fare of $1.75, 75-cents for children (five to 11 years), seniors (65 years and over), disabled and Medicare clients with valid I.D. All other valid Metro passes are accepted as well. Exact change is required on trolleys and buses.

The trolley service operates on the hour, starting at 9 a.m., with the last trolleys leaving the Niagara Falls Airport and The Aquarium of Niagara at midnight. Special Route 55T trolley stop signs along the route indicate where riders can board a trolley.

In downtown Niagara Falls, the 55T trolley stops are located at The Aquarium of Niagara, Rainbow Blvd. and Michael O'Laughlin Drive, Rainbow Blvd. and Main Street and near the Seneca Niagara Casino at Third Street and Old Falls Street.

In addition, stops are located at the City Market on Pine Avenue and 17th Street, the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, The Summit, several motels along Niagara Falls Boulevard and the Como Restaurant in Little Italy on Pine Avenue and 22nd Street.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that it is ready to open its 1,005-slip marina to slip holders and the public two weeks ahead of the anticipated opening date.

The NFTA-Boat Harbor at 1111 Fuhrmann Blvd., less then three miles from Downtown Buffalo will open the 2010 season Saturday, May 1 to accommodate slip holders and boaters who want to get an early start at docking or launching their boats at the marina. This is the first time that the facilities have ever been able to open prior to the traditional May 15 opening.

Peter G. Demakos, NFTA commissioner and chairman of the NFTA’s Property Committee said, “As a result of Mother Nature providing us with a stretch of nice weather and the dedication and hard work of our employees, we are able to give our customers a head start on the boating season this year.”

During the off-season, refurbishing work was completed on A, B, C, D, part of G, and H docks, completing a $726,381 two-year project to upgrade all 339 steel docks. Further, the main pier has been rebuilt. During the winter an additional $130,000 was invested to reinforce the structure with new pilings and it has been given a face-lift by way of new decking. Parking in the marina’s main lot was increased to 200 with the addition of 40 new spaces.

Two mainstays at the marina, Dug’s Dive and Bill’s Boat Works will also be opening May 1, and will be ready to serve customers fine food and beverage and provide boating services respectively.

An added customer service this season will be provided to boaters who want to file a float plan. Buffalo, NY . . . The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is hosting the 44 Annual Snow Symposium April 24-28 at the downtown Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Organizers expect almost 350 airport professionals, responsible for runway operations from around the world.

Lawrence M. Meckler, NFTA executive director, will open the conference, highlighting the economic and safety concerns that make snow, slush and ice mitigation so significant, and the importance of successful strategies.

Meckler said, “A snowstorm can cost a major airport more than a quarter of a million dollars in removal alone. The cost of delays compounds that number. None of which compares to the potential safety risks ice and snow can create. The chance for the snow removal teams from around the world to exchange ideas and best practices is invaluable.”

This year’s featured speaker is Captain Al Haynes. Haynes was born in Paris, Texas and raised in Dallas. He attended Texas A&M College before joining the Naval Aviation Cadet Training program in 1952. He was released from the service in 1956 after serving as a Marine Aviator. He joined United Airlines that year as a flight engineer and served in that capacity until his promotion to first officer in 1963. He flew the DC-6, DC-7, DC-8, Boeing 727, and DC-10. He was promoted to captain in 1985 and flew the Boeing 727 and DC-10 up to his retirement in August 1991, accumulating over 27,000 hours of flight time.

This is the 25 consecutive year the symposium is being hosted by the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Event chairman, Thomas Dames said, “The site selection committee continues to be impressed with Buffalo. The Convention and Visitors Bureau, the area hotels and the NFTA all work together to create an inviting atmosphere for the guests.”

The feature event of the symposium is the Balchen/Post Awards, which are given to airport snow-control teams that have demonstrated determination and excellence in keeping their respective airport runways open and safe during winter storms.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that starting Friday, April 16, Metro will begin serving the Walmart Supercenter in the LaSalle Center located at 1540 Military Rd. in Niagara Falls.

Metro’s Route 55, Pine Avenue bus will be rerouted to directly operate to the Walmart store parking lot via the main plaza entrance driveway and exit the parking lot to Niagara Falls Blvd., via 80th Street.

Presently the 55 bus has 68 weekday, 25 Saturday and 19 Sunday trips to the Walmart site to accommodate employees and customers.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that four public informational meetings have been scheduled in conjunction with Metroуs Service Restructuring and Fare Analysis/Strategic Assessment Study.

The public is invited to attend the meetings to learn the details contained in a draft report prepared by consultants from Transportation Management & Design, Inc. The firm was commissioned to conduct a comprehensive strategic assessment of how Metro delivers its service and recommend ways to better meet the mobility needs of the region, thus making it easier to access jobs, schools, entertainment, medical and social services using Metro.

Lawrence M. Meckler, NFTA executive director said, рThis service and fare analysis is one of the most significant projects Metro has undertaken. These informational meetings will provide our riders with an opportunity to learn and offer comments regarding the proposed service modifications and simplified fare structure.

Public informational meetings will be conducted from 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 15 at the Cheektowaga High School, 3600 Union Rd; Tuesday, March 16 at Erie Community College, City Campus Auditorium at Ellicott and South Division Streets and Wednesday, March 17 at Metroуs Portage Rd. Transit Center, 1124 Portage Rd., Niagara Falls. In addition, a meeting will be held at Erie Community College, South Campus Thursday, March 18 in Building 5, Room 5102 from 7-9 p.m.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that starting Monday, March 15 food items will be available for sale at various Metro Rail stations. Johnnyуs Hot Diggity Dogs of Buffalo will operate vending carts at University, LaSalle, Utica and Allen-Medical Campus Metro Rail stations from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. They will also be on-site during downtown events such as Sabres and Bisons games, in addition to other special community events. Eunice A. Lewin, NFTA commissioner said, рOur desire is to elevate the overall experience our customers encounter when using Metro. Having customer amenities like food and beverage on site will improve the overall atmosphere at the stations and make them more user friendly.с Customers will be able to purchase hot dogs, Polish and Italian sausage, hamburgers, bags of snacks and cold beverages while at the station. Metroуs policy of no eating or drinking when using the bus or rail system remains in effect.

Volunteers to be Recognized with President’s Points of Light Award

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that the hospitality ambassadors at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport will celebrate their 10th anniversary Wednesday, Feb. 3 during a 1 p.m. luncheon at the Hearthstone Manor in Cheektowaga, NY.

Approximately 70 volunteers ranging in age from 16 to 80, act as regional “goodwill ambassadors” by providing friendly assistance and helpful information to passengers and guests of the BNIA. The ambassadors, clad in their distinctive blue blazers, assist with directions to local and regional attractions, lodging details, information regarding public transit and in general, act as “liaisons” of goodwill for the region.

Lawrence M. Meckler, NFTA executive director said, “Our ambassadors are one of the reasons why our airport is deemed to be so user friendly. While the design of the airport has won awards, in the final analysis, it is our people who create the positive difference in the operation. The ambassadors have become essential in our efforts to be one of the best airports in the country.”

While many airports have volunteer programs, the Buffalo airport ranks in the top 10 for number of hours volunteered. This past year 7,150 hours of volunteered service were provided, which has an economic value of approximately $105,000. As such, each volunteer who qualifies will be awarded a President’s Volunteer Award from the Points of Light Institute as part of the national program recognizing and celebrating the importance of volunteer service.

In commemoration of the 10-year anniversary, former ambassadors have been invited to attend the luncheon. Of the "original” six who began in 1999, four still participate in the program.

Edward J. Healy, V.P., Marketing for the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau will be giving an overview of CVB operations and speaking about upcoming events. “The ambassadors play a key role in welcoming individuals and groups to the region and help create a dynamic first impression for visitors to the region,” Healy said.

The ambassadors are committed to ensuring that a visitor’s first impression of our community is positive. “You only get one chance to create a good first impression, so we’d better get it right on the first try,” Meckler added.

Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that Metro Rail will extend service an additional two hours Thursday, Dec. 31, to accommodate passengers attending the Annual New Year's Eve Ball Drop at Roosevelt Square and the downtown First Night Buffalo celebration.

Train service will run continuously, making stops at all stations during the extended service period. Trains will be on 20 minute intervals, with special trains intermingled as needed. It may be necessary to suspend service for a time due to the anticipated large crowd that gathers near the track bed in front of Roosevelt Square.

The last train is scheduled to leave Erie Canal Harbor Station heading outbound to University Station at 2 a.m. Friday, New Year's Day following the events.

Wheels Up for Direct Air from the New Terminal

Buffalo, NY . . . Good News for those traveling in and out of Niagara Falls, NY. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that the inaugural flight from its new $31.5 million terminal at the Niagara Falls International Airport will take place today, Friday, Dec. 18.

History will be made today when Direct Air's MD-83 aircraft operated by Falcon Air departs the new terminal at 6:15 pm destined for Punta Gorda/Ft. Myers, Fla. with all 155 seats occupied. The first flight to Myrtle Beach, SC departs shortly thereafter at 6:30 p.m. on a USA Jet DC-9.

Henry M. Sloma, NFTA acting chairman said, "This is truly a memorable day for the Niagara community, the airport, and Direct Air. Today's initial flight signifies the beginning of a bright future for the terminal and provides a gateway landmark in which we can all take great pride."

"We are confident the new facility will enhance the exceptional service we provide to the thousands of passengers from the U.S. and Canada to Myrtle Beach, Ft Myers / Punta Gorda, and soon to be ... Melbourne, Fla.," said Direct Air Managing Partner Ed Warneck. "We look forward to strengthening our relationship with the Niagara community as well as increasing frequency and additional destinations to and from the Niagara Falls International Airport."

"The new facility conveniences and state of the art processing will greatly appeal to our passengers," said Judy Tull, Direct Air Managing Partner. "We are extremely pleased to have played a vital role and influence in the development and launch of the new Niagara Falls International Airport."

The airport's two-gate facility provides for efficient, customer oriented passenger processing, curbside check-in, a two level layout for jet bridge boarding, free Wi-Fi, food and beverage concessions, convenient free on-site parking, a federal inspection station, in-line baggage screening, eight stationary ticket counter stations, ATM, tourist information counter, car rental and a Metro transit center, for convenient access to public transportation.

The NFIA is now capable of simultaneously processing international and domestic flights and fully accommodating 747 and 757 aircraft. The innovative, and scalable, split-level holdrooms provide all passengers with an outstanding level of customer service regardless of aircraft size.

To help celebrate this special occasion, 23 dignitaries and media staff from Myrtle Beach traveled on the last flight to the old terminal in Niagara Falls. A special luncheon hosted by NFIA welcomed the invited guests.

"Direct Air is taking advantage of this opportunity to introduce the communities to each other and follow up with strategic marketing summits designed to share ideas and opportunities to help grow their markets," Warneck said. "The same group from Myrtle Beach will take a quick jaunt to see the magnificent Falls, before boarding the first flight to Myrtle Beach."

Direct Air commenced service at the NFIA in March 2007 with nonstop service to Myrtle Beach. During the past two and a half years, featuring low fare nonstop service to Myrtle Beach and Florida, the airline has attracted over 90,000 passengers to the Niagara Falls terminal, a large percentage coming from Canada, who are attracted by low fares, an easy access airport and savings with international fees for Canadian travelers.

Direct Air presently operates flights Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday to Punta Gorda/Ft. Myers and increases to daily service except Tuesdays beginning February 2010.

Managing Partner, Judy Tull said, "Our marketing budget has limited our growth to Myrtle Beach, however, our goal for 2010 is encouraging the communities to help find marketing funds to allow us to increase to daily frequency. Buffalo, NY . . . The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced that it will be necessary to suspend Metro Rail service between Fountain Plaza Station and Church Street Station for a portion of the day Wednesday and Thursday Dec. 16 and 17, with Friday being a possible alternate date.

As a result of scenes for the movie Henry's Crime, starring Keanu Reeves being filmed in Metro Rail's track bed at Main and Huron Sts., service will be suspended between the two stations each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Shuttle service will be provided to take passengers to the next station both inbound and outbound each day.

Trains will operate in both directions between Erie Canal Harbor Station and Church Street Station and from University Station to Fountain Plaza Station. As a result of the logistics involved, it is necessary to adjust the time between trains from 12 minutes to approximately 20 minutes during the 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. period.

Regular rail service will be provided before and after the suspension period each day.
