NFTA Expands Accessibility with New ASL Interpreting Service via Aira ASL

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is pleased to announce a new American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting service available for travelers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is pleased to announce a new American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting service available for travelers. Anyone at Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) and Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG) can now use the Aira ASL app to connect on-demand with a professional ASL interpreter. The service is free and seamlessly bridges communication gaps between the Deaf and hearing.

Users simply download the Aira ASL app and connect with a professional interpreter at the tap of a button. Using the video and microphone capabilities of the caller’s mobile device, the Aira ASL app allows Deaf and hearing people to communicate with one another. Aira ASL can be used across a wide range of situations at the two airports, such as flight check-in, catching connecting flights, and locating taxis and ride shares.

Calls to Aira ASL can be made by both Deaf and hearing individuals to enhance communication. The service is available 24/7/365, and no reservations are required.

“Aira is thrilled to be strengthening our relationship with the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority,” said Henri Grau, Director of Deaf Community Engagement at Aira. “By adding Aira ASL to their accessibility offerings, they are ensuring everyone at BUF and IAG has equitable access to the communication and information required for smooth and enjoyable travel experiences.”

Both BUF and IAG already offer Aira Explorer, an on-demand visual interpreting service for the blind and low vision community. The addition of the Aira ASL app further enhances the accessibility of the two airports, ensuring blind, low vision, and Deaf travelers have instant access to the information they need, when they need it.

“Accessible services are critical to both safety and independence.” Says Kim Minkel, Executive Director, NFTA. “Our Commitment is to provide the tools, support, and environments that allow every traveler to navigate our airports with confidence.”

Download Aira ASL for free in the iOS App Store, the Google Play Store, or use the desktop app.
