NFTA Holds Ribbon Cutting for DL&W Sky Deck
On Thursday, October 1, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) celebrated another milestone event at the DL&W.
A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening of the DL&W Sky Deck, a new public-facing space on the second floor of the historic building. The event highlighted the transformation of the transportation landmark and its continued role in connecting Buffalo’s past with its future.
“The DL&W is an important part of Buffalo’s history, and the Sky Deck gives people an entirely new way to experience this remarkable building and its waterfront setting,” said Kim Minkel, Executive Director of the NFTA. “We’re excited to invite the community to come out, enjoy the afternoon, and see firsthand how this historic space is being transformed into a vibrant destination.”
The celebration continues Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with a special hockey-themed Rooftop Rally on the Sky Deck. The Sky Deck will transform with hockey themed games, music , and food offering visitors an opportunity to experience the unique space while taking in elevated views of the Buffalo waterfront. The Sky Deck is approximately 55,000 square feet of outdoor deck space that will support events for over 2,100 people, with the ability to bring in food trucks, an outdoor stage, and event equipment up and down from the 2nd-floor outdoor space. The restoration of the DL&W will integrate the trainshed with the nearby Canalside and KeyBank Center, creating a vibrant hub for recreation and entertainment.
